Walk down any personal care aisle and you will see dozens of soft, glossy, squeezable tubes holding face washes, creams and gels. Many of them are PBL lami tubes. They look premium, protect the product and return to their original shape after every squeeze, which keeps the brand's design looking good until the last use.
In this guide, we explain what a PBL lami tube is, how its layers work, how it compares with an ABL tube, and how to choose the right specification for your product. For an overview of the full range, browse our laminated tubes.
PBL stands for Plastic Barrier Laminate. A PBL lami tube is made from a laminate web of several plastic layers bonded together. One of those layers is a barrier material, usually EVOH (ethylene vinyl alcohol), which slows down the passage of oxygen and aroma. Unlike an ABL tube, there is no aluminium foil in the structure.
The flat laminate is printed, rolled into a sleeve, sealed along a side seam, fitted with a moulded shoulder and neck, and closed with a cap. The open bottom end is sealed by the brand after filling. See our plastic barrier lami tube product page for details.
A typical PBL laminate is built from these layers, from outside to inside:
Exact thickness and layer counts vary by application, and the total laminate thickness is selected to balance stiffness, feel and barrier performance.
| Feature | PBL (Plastic Barrier Laminate) | ABL (Aluminium Barrier Laminate) |
|---|---|---|
| Barrier layer | EVOH or similar plastic | Thin aluminium foil |
| Barrier strength | Good | Very high against oxygen, light and moisture |
| After squeezing | Springs back to shape | Stays folded (dead fold), reducing air suck-back |
| Appearance | Smooth, premium look over the whole life of the product | Can look wrinkled after use |
| Typical products | Cosmetics, skin care, hair care, personal care | Toothpaste, pharma ointments, sensitive formulas |
| Recycling | All-plastic structure | Contains metal, harder to separate |
As a rule of thumb, choose PBL when appearance and feel matter most and the formula is not highly sensitive to oxygen or light. Choose ABL for toothpaste, pharmaceutical lami tubes and any product that must not oxidise or lose potency.
PBL tubes are most common in beauty and personal care. Typical uses include face washes, moisturisers, BB and CC creams, sunscreens, hand creams, hair gels and serums. Many herbal and ayurvedic brands use them for herbal cosmetics lami tubes and ayurvedic lami tubes. Skin care brands choose them for fairness cream tubes and shaving cream tubes. For a full view of beauty applications, read our guide to cosmetic lami tubes.
Caps influence buying decisions more than many brands expect. Our blog explains how good-quality tube caps boost product sales.
Brands sometimes compare PBL lami tubes with extruded seamless tubes. Both are all-plastic, but they are made differently and suit different needs. Our article on seamless cosmetic tubes explains the differences.

PBL stands for Plastic Barrier Laminate. A PBL lami tube is made from a multi-layer plastic laminate in which a barrier layer, usually EVOH, protects the product instead of aluminium foil.
ABL (Aluminium Barrier Laminate) tubes use a thin aluminium foil layer as the barrier, giving the strongest protection against oxygen, light and moisture, and the tube stays squeezed after use. PBL tubes use a plastic barrier such as EVOH, spring back to their original shape and are preferred for many cosmetic and personal care products.
PBL tubes suit face washes, creams, lotions, gels, sunscreens, hair care products, hand creams and many herbal and ayurvedic cosmetic formulations. Highly sensitive pharmaceutical products usually need ABL tubes.
PBL tubes contain no aluminium, so their all-plastic structure is generally easier to handle in plastic recycling streams than ABL tubes. Actual recyclability depends on the exact laminate structure and local recycling facilities.
Laminated tubes are commonly produced in diameters from about 16 mm to 35 mm, with the tube length chosen to match the fill volume. Antilla Propack customises diameter, length, print and cap to each brand's requirement.
