When beauty brands plan a new cream, gel or lotion, one early packaging question is whether to use a seamless tube or a laminated tube. Both are squeezable, lightweight and widely used in cosmetics. But they are made in very different ways, and those differences affect how the tube protects your formula, how your design prints, how the tube feels in hand and what it costs.
This guide explains what seamless cosmetic tubes are, how they are made, where they work best, and how they compare with laminated tubes, so you can choose with confidence.
In packaging, "seamless tube" usually means an extruded plastic tube. Plastic resin, typically a blend of low-density and high-density polyethylene (LDPE and HDPE), is melted and pushed through a round die to form a continuous hollow sleeve. Because the sleeve is formed as a complete circle, the tube body has no side seam.
Seamless tubes come in two main types:
The key point is that seamless tubes are decorated after the tube is formed. Laminated tubes are printed before forming, while the laminate is still a flat sheet.
A laminated tube starts as a multi-layer sheet. The sheet is printed flat, rolled into a sleeve and sealed along a narrow side seam. Its barrier comes either from an EVOH layer in a PBL (plastic barrier laminate) tube or from aluminium foil in an ABL (aluminium barrier laminate) tube.
| Factor | Seamless (extruded) tube | Laminated tube |
|---|---|---|
| Side seam | None | Narrow sealed side seam |
| Barrier | Limited in mono-layer; better in co-extruded EVOH tubes | Good (PBL) to very high (ABL) |
| Printing | Printed after forming | Printed flat before forming, suited to detailed multi-colour artwork |
| Feel | Soft, flexible, can be translucent | Smooth and firm, glossy or matte |
| Shape after squeezing | Springs back | PBL springs back; ABL stays folded |
| Typical products | Lotions, hand creams, gels, simple designs | Creams, face washes, hair colour, toothpaste, pharma |
A laminated tube always has a side seam, but modern designs make it far less noticeable. A narrow seam, combined with artwork that runs continuously across the seam area, gives a clean look from the front and sides of the tube. For many brands, this offers most of the visual benefit of a seamless tube with the printing and barrier advantages of a laminate. Our team can advise on artwork layout so the seam sits where it is least visible.
For everyday creams, face washes and gels, cosmetic lami tubes are the most common choice in India. Brands packing hair colour or herbal cosmetics often prefer laminated tubes for their barrier and print quality. Skin care brands can explore our skin cream lami tubes, and all tubes can be matched with screw, flip-top or stand-up caps.
Based in Rajkot, Gujarat, since 2009, Antilla Propack manufactures laminated tubes for cosmetic, pharmaceutical, toothpaste and food brands. Our R&D team can help you compare tube options for your formula, artwork and budget. Browse all products.
A seamless cosmetic tube is usually an extruded plastic tube. Molten polyethylene is pushed through a round die to form a continuous sleeve, so the tube body has no side seam. It is then cut, fitted with a shoulder and cap, and decorated.
Seamless tubes are extruded as a round sleeve with no side seam and are decorated after forming. Laminated tubes are made from a printed multi-layer sheet that is rolled and sealed along a side seam. Laminated tubes usually offer stronger barrier options and high-resolution pre-printing, while seamless tubes offer an uninterrupted surface and a softer feel.
Mono-layer seamless tubes offer a limited barrier against oxygen and aroma loss. Multi-layer co-extruded seamless tubes with an EVOH layer improve this. For highly sensitive formulas, an ABL or PBL laminated tube is often the safer choice.
Laminated tubes always have a side seam, but a narrow seam combined with artwork designed to continue across it can make the seam hard to notice on the shelf.
It depends on quantity, decoration and barrier needs. Laminated tubes are often very cost-effective for multi-colour printed designs at volume, while seamless tubes can suit simpler designs or products where a soft, seam-free body is a priority. Compare quotes on the same size, print and cap.
